The SSA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course
Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

Course duration: 6 weeks
Minimum age: 18 years

Week 1: learn-to-surf course
Week 2: surf lifesaving introduction & training
Week 3: surf lifesaving theory and extra training (receive surf instructor course outline)
Week 4: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – SSA level 1 Surf Instructor’s Course
               Saturday & Sunday – finish surf lifesaving course
Week 5: Instructing practical, work experience and Lifesaving examination
Week 6: Instructing practical, work experience and instructor evaluation

Course Outline

Phase 1: Learn-to-surf course
This course will be adjusted according to the student’s level of surfing experience, from beginner to advanced.
All equipment provided.
Course duration: 7 lessons over 5 days

Phase 2: Surf Lifesaving course
Course requirements: a minimum pool time of 400m in 8 minutes
knowledge of breaststroke and 2 other swimming strokes
Course duration: 15 hours over 3 weeks
Week 1: 2hrs/day x4 days (introduction)
Week 2: students own time to learn theory (* and put in extra hours if need be)
Week 3 (Sat & Sun): 3.5hrs/day (practical)
* extra training hours available at own expense

Phase 3: The Surfing South Africa (SSA) Level 1 Surf Coach Training Course
Course requirements: The ability to catch a wave and effect a controlled turn to both sides.
Completion of the surf life saving course
Various aspects of the Level 1 pre-course workbook to be completed
before the course commences.
Own surfboard and wetsuit (rental equipment available)
Course duration: 3 days
* The SSA Surf Instructor Course is both BSA and ASA endorsed.

Phase 4: Practical and work experience
Students are required to offer volunteer surf instruction as part of a social upliftment program aswell as participate in practical work in a local surfboard factory.
Duration: 30 hrs over 2 weeks

Yoga for Surfers
Duration: 1 lesson/week over 6 weeks

Includes 6 weeks hotel accommodation; continental breakfast and a R50 meal voucher per day
