The Garden Route The Garden Route, which traverses South Africa’s southern Cape region, offers a variety of attractions for young and old. Starting in Cape Town and ending in Port Elizabeth, the terrain along this national highway varies from beautiful rolling farmland to pristine beaches, magnificent estuaries, deep indigenous forests and dramatic mountain ranges. From Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma the N2 highway skirts the coast, starting with a dramatic arrival at the sea at The Wilderness and Wilderness National Park, which is set along a beautiful estuary. Next comes the coastal town of Sedgefield, followed by Knysna, voted South Africa’s favourite town a number of times. The Knysna estuary/lagoon is home to yachting, skiing, fishing and diving and the town offers many quaint shops and restaurants, and is best known for its oysters, particularly during the annual Oyster Festival.Plettenberg Bay, from where Jamin Adventures operates, offers another breathtaking seascape, sweeping from Robberg peninsula and nature reserve to Keurbooms River and beach. Plett, as it’s fondly known, is a haven for surfers and all types of watersports enthusiasts, as well as hikers, photographers, sun-seekers and fun-lovers of all kinds. Shopping and restaurants are abundant and accommodation varies from ultra-luxurious to down-to-earth backpackers.After crossing a number of impressive bridges over deep ravines, including Bloukrans, famous for being the highest single arch bridge bungy jump in the world, one arrives at Tstsikamma National Park, exit point of the Storms River, which offers even more amazing beauty and is the starting point of the four-day Otter Trail, world famous for its undulating coastal route, up through indigenous forest, down onto pristine beaches and across several large rivers. This is nature at its most dramatic and most challenging. Tsitsikamma also has other adventure options for eager young travellers and not far along the route to Port Elizabeth is Jeffreys Bay, world famous for its surfing.
